MAN v FAT St Helens is a 7-a-side football league for men who want to lose weight. Weigh in, play on a Monday night and let your team keep you going. The weight you lose counts on the scoresheet.
Seven-a-side on Monday nights. Every goal scored on the night counts, like any other league.
The weigh-in before kick-off. Players who lose weight add goals for their team; players who gain weight cost them. Hit 5% or 10% and you get a milestone.
Pitch goals plus scales goals, plus tracking points. A team can lose on the pitch and still win the match at the scales. That is why the Overall table can look different from the Pitch table.
MAN v FAT St Helens is a football league for men who want to lose weight and get fitter. It runs on the MAN v FAT format, where results are decided on the pitch and on the scales. You don't need to be good at football, and you don't need to be fit to start. You just need to turn up on a Monday and give it a go.
Every match night starts with a weigh-in. Players who lose weight earn goals for their team, and players who put weight on cost them. Then it's 7-a-side football. The final score adds both together, so a team can lose the game and still win the night because they lost more weight. You play for your teammates as well as yourself, which is what keeps people coming back.
We play every Monday evening at St Cuthberts School in St Helens, with kick-offs from 7pm to 8:30pm. There are eight teams in the league, and each season runs for around fourteen weeks with full league tables, results and player stats on this site.
Alongside the league we run an 11-a-side team in the Northern Wellbeing League, play friendlies against other MAN v FAT clubs, and raise money for local charities. Our news section has healthy recipes and weight loss tips to help between match nights.
Men who want to lose weight. MAN v FAT Football is for men with a BMI of 27.5 or above, whatever your fitness level.
No. Plenty of our players hadn't kicked a ball in years before they joined. The scoring system means your weight loss matters as much as your skill.

Yes. The league is currently full, so new players join the waiting list and are offered a place when a spot opens up in a team.
Add your name to the waiting list using the button on this page and we'll get in touch when a place comes up.
Target £2,000 this season. Placeholder values: plug in the live total when the tracker is updated.
Places open when a squad spot comes up. Join the waiting list and we'll call you when there's a team with room.

No weight top scorers, hat-tricks or milestones were recorded for Season 15 on the current site, so those lists are left out rather than shown empty.
| Season | Champions | Scales | Pitch | Challenge | Amazing Loser | Top scorer | Clubman |

Separate Scales and Pitch titles started in Season 12, and the Challenge title in Season 14. A dash means the award isn't recorded on the current site.
Awards are taken from each season page on the current site. The Season 5 Clubman award comes from Stephen McConville's player stats. Clubman has only been recorded for two seasons, so the grey "Not recorded" rows show what's missing.
All eight weeks played so far, newest first. Scores are the real Season 16 results: pitch + scales + tracking = final score.
When the result is in, this area becomes the scoresheet:
Your current site already holds 16 seasons of matches, 140 players, every team and the table setup in SportsPress. On a truly blank install you'd have to import all of that and set every result column up again. The safer route is to copy the live site to a staging site, install the new theme there, and switch over when it's ready. That keeps the data, the URLs (/season-16/, /team/fatalanta/, /match/4610/) and your Google rankings. The steps below work either way. On a clone, skip the ones already done.
The design is plain HTML and CSS, so it doesn't need a page builder. Pick one:
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Rookie (by ThemeBoy, free) | Made for SportsPress. Tables, events and players are styled out of the box | Needs a child theme with this design's CSS on top |
| Kadence or GeneratePress | Fast and lightweight. Header, footer and colours set in the Customizer | SportsPress templates need some extra CSS |
| Keep Elementor | What the current site uses, so it's familiar | Heavier pages. Harder to keep the brand consistent |
Whichever you choose, add the brand settings from this prototype: black #000000, yellow #FFFF00, red #FF2323 and white, with Bebas Neue for headings and Arial for body text.
| Plugin | What it's for | Status |
|---|---|---|
| SportsPress Pro | Leagues, seasons, teams, players, matches, tables, player lists | Essential |
| Advanced Custom Fields (free) | Season honours (awards), fundraising total, week numbers | Essential |
| Yoast SEO | Page titles, meta descriptions, Google data. Already on the live site | Essential |
| Wordfence + 2FA | Security. Already on the live site | Essential |
| Redirection | Keeps old links working if any URL changes | Essential |
| A forms plugin (Fluent Forms, WPForms) | The "Join the waiting list" form | Recommended |
| Smash Balloon Instagram Feed | The Instagram feed. Already on the live site | Optional |
| Caching + image optimisation | Speed. Use your host's cache if it has one, plus WebP images | Recommended |
| Code Snippets, or a small custom plugin | Holds the custom shortcodes in step 6 | Essential |
This is the important part. Scoring works because of how the results are set up. These are the settings your live site uses today:
goals Overall · secondhalf Pitch · firsthalf Scale · tracking · hattricks · owngoals · milestones · challenge · teamloss. Keep these keys exactly on a clone, because all past results use them. The live site reused the football "first half" and "second half" columns for Scale and Pitch.clubman, topscorer, biggestloser…) are almost unused on the live site. Record awards once per season in ACF instead (step 5)SportsPress covers most of the design. These pieces need a little code, roughly a few hundred lines in total:
| Shortcode | Where it's used | What it does |
|---|---|---|
[mvf_result] | Home, Results, Team, Season | Result card with the Pitch / Scales / Tracking split, the win tag and the P and S labels |
[mvf_table_week] | Season, Past season | The "Table after week N" slider with up and down arrows |
[mvf_bump] | Season, Past season | The week-by-week position chart |
[mvf_champions] | Past season | Champions banner, trophy cards and "Treble" tag |
[mvf_numbers] | Past season | Biggest win, highest-scoring match, best weigh-in, longest run |
[mvf_honours] | Honours | Season-by-season grid, award key, hall of fame |
[mvf_countdown] | Home | Next match card (or use SportsPress's own Countdown, restyled) |
All of these read the same match results SportsPress already stores, so nothing is entered twice.
